Conquering the Web

January 16, 2007

The Internet can be overwhelming for teachers and students. Many of us have encountered poorly written or unreliable web sites. During the first part of class, we will use Alan November's website November Learning to learn how to find authoritative information on the Internet. We focus on the Information Literacy portion of his site. To learn more about Alan November's courses and publications view his web site.
Web sites we will view today:
www.archive.org Go back in time on the web with the 'Way Back Machine'.
www.easywhois.com Find the author of any web site.
www.answers.com An amazing reference tool available on the Internet for free!
www.allaboutexplorers.com It looks professional...is it?
www.altavista.com Search to find what you need!

As discussed in today's class, the Internet can be overwhelming. You were asked to share a web site you use with your students or when planning lessons. Here is the list of web sites we shared.
www.20q.net
www.idiomsite.com
www.pilkey.com
www.starfall.com
www.handwritingworksheets.com
www.wordcentral.com

In the second part of today's class, we will explore WebQuests and and Filamentality.

WebQuests

According to Bernie Dodge, creator of the WebQuest, "a WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation".
Follow the link below to Mr. Dodge's web site. You can search for WebQuests by subject and grade level.

Filamentality

Filamentality "is a fill-in-the-blank tool that guides you through picking a topic, searching the Internet, gathering good Internet links, and turning them into online learning activities. In the end, you'll create a web-based activity you can share with others even if you don't know anything about HTML or serving web pages".
Filamentality is easy-to-use and offers many help pages.
